Some essay questions may have a narrow, specific focus.

For example: 'Compare the arguments made by Reginald Scot and King James I/VI about the reality of witchcraft. Which position was more typical of its time and why?'

While others may be quite broad, such as: 'Social equality is a myth. Discuss.'

The first example identifies some specific writers to focus on, and asks a direct question. The second example is much broader: you could approach it in many, many different ways. Sometimes these types of questions can be more difficult, especially if you have a tight word count.


TIP: It is better to write a lot about a little, rather than a little about a lot. Don't try to make too many different points in an essay, especially when your word count is tight.

Even if the essay question is broad, your answer should have a clear and specific focus. Therefore, you need to choose an area of the topic to concentrate on. If answering the second question above, you might want to examine a key area of social equality (or inequality), with key examples to illustrate your argument. You must tell the reader, in your introduction, how you plan to address the essay question and why.

It is also important to note that, although the first essay question tells you which writers to focus on and which aspect of their work to discuss, it does not dictate which way you have to argue. You are still free to choose your own standpoint (based on reasons and evidence) as to whether Reginald Scot or King James represents a more typical position for their time period.
