Matt Hancock MP and Minister for Skills and Enterprise during Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) on Thursday 21st November 2014There may be many reasons why you are doing this course. It could be that you have volunteered to do it having already recognised your need to further develop your enterprise skills, or it may be that you have been recommended (or required!) to do it as part of your substantive course.

Whatever the reason(s), it is a fair question to ask “Why is this important to me now?” We know that your degree course is demanding and there are a number of pressures on your time. However the University, along with employers and the Government, recognise enterprise as a driver for producing graduates who can think on their feet, possess original thought and have a "can do" attitude in a rapidly changing economy.  Gaining those skills while at University will give you a head start in readiness for applications, careers and indeed coping with the complexities of life. Learn by doing. Experiment, take risks, reflect on successes and failures to build confidence, independence and self-motivation. Employers seek enterprising graduates as they constantly need to innovate while keeping costs low.  The Government wants enterprising graduates as they will go on to have a significant impact on the economy, the environment and society. Being enterprising will also provide you with wider career options (employment, self-employment or freelancing) with the ability to be flexible, taking ownership of your future.

There is even a Government Minister of State for Skills and Enterprise!
