Tagging marginalia - things to remember

Tag what you see

It is important to try to tag what you see in the margin.

Here are some things to remember:

A) If in doubt...

Marginalia can be difficult to read. The best thing to do if you are struggling to read any marginalia is to ask on the bulletin board.

B) If the marginalia contains abbreviations, make sure this appears within the marginalia tag:

C) If the marginalia is several lines long, use the line break tags within the tag:

D) If something appears in the bottom margin, it may in fact be a catchword.

A catchword is a word written in the bottom margin of the page. It is usually the same word as the first word on the next page. Catchwords do not appear on every page.

They should not be tagged using <note>, as they are not marginalia because they do not refer to the meaning of the text. They are there to show the bookbinder the order to bind the pages of the book together. For this reason they are tagged using <forme work>. For information on how to tag catchwords you should check the Transcription Guidelines wiki.
