FAQs in English

How do I know which folios are assigned to me?

On Textual Communities, log in and choose 'Estoria de Espanna'. Then click on the profile tab. You should see a list of folios which are assigned to you.

I can't save my work. What should I do?

There are two reasons why you might not be able to save.

The first is that the folio is not assigned to you. You can tell if a folio is assigned to you by checking that the save button is dark black, not grey.

If the save button looks like this, the folio is not assigned to you:

This means you should not work on this folio. If you think the folio should be assigned to you, and there has been a mistake, email a.m.m.ward@bham.ac.uk

Occasionally, pressing 'save' temporarily will not work. What you should do in this case is copy and paste your transcription onto another programme, such as Text Wrangler if you have it, or Word. Then you can reload the Textual Communities page and paste it back into the transcription. You should find it will then save.

I have finished and saved my transcription, but when I press 'preview' an error message comes up.

This means you have made a mistake somewhere in your tagging. Look carefully through the error message. It will tell you what the problem is, although sometimes the explanation in the error message can be difficult to understand. One common error is that you have left a tag open somewhere. You should check all your open tags are closed.

Textual Communities is not displaying correctly for me.

Textual Communities works best with Google Chrome. Ensure you are using an up-to-date version of this browser, rather than other browsers such as Safari, Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.

It may also help you to clear your cookies to ensure you are viewing the most up-to-date version of the Textual Communities page. Textual Communities appears to be 'jumping around'.

Sometimes, when you have moved from folio to folio too quickly, Textual Communities seems to become 'confused' - it jumps from folio to folio and refreshes itself several times. On these occasions you should close the Textual Communities tab and then re-open it. The problem should now be rectified. Obviously, closing the tab means you will lose any unsaved work, but when Textual Communities becomes confused like this it will not allow you to save. This highlights the requirement for saving your work very often - at least every five minutes.

I've found something in the manuscript and I really can't figure out how to tag it.

There will be times when you may come across words, abbreviations or scribal changes which you are unsure how to tag. If you cannot find the answer in this introductory course or in the transcription guidelines don't worry - the bulletin board is designed exactly for this purpose. Look through previous threads - someone may have already had a similar issue, and the answer may have been provided by another member. Otherwise, you should post your query as outlined in the 'Using the Bulletin Board' section of this course.
