Set of Pamphlets Describing Visual Conditions

Task

shutterstock_82049359.jpgIn your role as a specialist teacher in training you have been asked to produce a set of pamphlets describing various visual conditions for parents and non-specialist teachers. They should include a brief description of the condition and the implications of such on learning and daily living activities. Each member of the group should select one visual condition from the list below, although another condition can be selected which is more pertinent to your own practice and/or experience.

Keratoconus; Nystagmus; Cataracts; Albinism; Coloboma; Aniridia; Glaucoma; Leber’s amaurosis; Retinitis pigmentosa; Optic atrophy; Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI)

a) As a group devise a format and headings for the pamphlets.
b) Each group member to then design and produce an individual pamphlet for the selected condition.
c) Comment on the rest of the groups’ pamphlets before submission, and make appropriate suggestions for any additional information to be included (eg relevant websites, sources of information etc).

Please remember that the pamphlets are intended for non-specialists and so should be easy to understand and useful both in the classroom and at home.

Proposed restructure of the North Bassetshire Service

shutterstock_70166548.jpgTask: A QTVI colleague from a neighbouring local authority has approached your EBL group for advice on responding to proposals to restructure the service she works for. Read the Download attached consultation document

and discuss how you might advise her to respond. Pay particular attention to the following questions.

  • What does the document say about the needs of children with vision impairment in North Bassetshire? What does it not say?
  • How does it justify its proposals for future service provision?
  • What does it say about the relative responsibilities of schools and services?
  • What further information would you need to make an informed response to the consultation?
  • When consulting with children and parents, what questions should North Bassetshire be asking them?

On the basis of your discussion, agree a list of 10 suggestions to help your colleague to respond  to the consultation document.
