The Panopto software is available in all centrally booked teaching room computers across campus. It is also possible to install the software onto your University computers or to download onto personal devices. After downloading you can follow the steps for making a manual recording.

University Managed Computers

If you are using a University computer, Panopto can be installed from the Software Centre approved software listing. Please note that these instructions will not work on computers in teachings rooms.

Step 1: If you are working from home, log onto Remote Access https://remoteaccess.bham.ac.uk/

Step 2: Find the Software Centre link by searching in the Start menu of your computer. The applications catalogue will open on your computer.

Step 3: In the search box type Panopto

Step 4: Locate Panopto Focus Recorder

Step 5: Click on the Install and follow the online instructions.

Step 5: On some machines the Panopto recorder will not work unless you also install Windows Media Feature Pack. This is also available from the Software Centre.

You will not be able to install the software onto a university computer, unless you go via the Software Centre. If working from home, please log on to remote access before accessing the Software Centre.

For any issues with installing the Panopto recorder on University computers please log a call with the IT Service Desk.

Personal Computers

When downloading the software please make sure you select the appropriate operating system (Windows or Apple)

You need to have Administration rights to the computer to be able to install the software unless installing from the UoB Software Centre.

Windows PC

Step 1: Navigate to a course in Canvas and locate Panopto in the course menu.

Step 2: In the top right corner of the Panopto window in Canvas, click on the icon to launch Panopto in a new window Launch Panopto Icon of white arrow in a black box

Step 3: Click on the Download Panopto link in the top corner of the screen.

Step 4: Click on the download option appropriate for your computer (Windows / Apple Mac). This will download an installation file that you can run on your computer to install Panopto.

Step 5: Once downloaded you should be able to run the installation programme to complete the installation.

If you are downloading the software directly from the Panopto server you may need to enter the server address to the recorder:

Panopto Server Address - bham.cloud.panopto.eu

Step 6: You can now make a manual recording.

Mac OS

Installing Panopto on a MacBook or iMac should follow the same process, however you may be asked to input your Mac administrator details and connect to the University of Birmingham server (bham.cloud.panopto.eu) as above.

The Panopto recorder for Mac works with macOS 10.13 and above. Users of macOS 10.12 (Sierra) can upgrade their operating system or install an earlier Panopto recorder (v7.0) which will only be supported until Summer 2020.
