Introducing In Conversation, an exciting interview series where AWAS (Academic Writing Advisory Service) tutors sit down with researchers across the University of Birmingham to explore their experiences with academic writing and study skills. What began as a project within the College of Arts and Law in 2023 has now expanded university-wide, highlighting the shared challenges of academic writing that researchers across all disciplines face. From imposter syndrome to managing feedback, the series offers a candid look into the universal struggles of academic writing, while also delving into the unique, discipline-specific hurdles encountered by scholars in different fields. Whether you're in the humanities, sciences, or social sciences, In Conversation provides insightful conversations that remind us that everyone wrestles with their writing—but there are always ways to improve.

As we look to the future, In Conversation aims to go beyond simply sharing insights into the challenges of academic writing. Our goal is to tackle some of the deeper issues that researchers across disciplines often face. By creating open, honest discussions about the difficulties faced during writing and the pressure to meet academic expectations, we hope to demystify these feelings and show that they are a common experience—even among the most accomplished scholars.

Our broader vision is to foster a supportive community of practice across the University of Birmingham. We want to create a space where researchers, students, and academics can come together to share strategies, struggles, and successes in academic writing. Through these interviews and collaborative initiatives, we aim to promote an inclusive, peer-driven culture of learning where everyone can improve their writing skills and feel confident in their work. Ultimately, we hope to build a university-wide network where dialogue on writing, feedback, and discipline-specific challenges can continue to evolve, encouraging growth and mutual support in a shared academic journey.
