Welcome to the University of Birmingham’s Mentor online training course. This course has been designed to support you throughout your journey with your mentee. We will go over what to expect and provide advice and resources to support you during your meetings. Upon joining the Scheme mentees also complete a similar training course to prepare them for their mentorship.

Summary of Module 1 - An introduction to mentoring

Learn about what Mentoring is and isn't.
Explore the benefits of the Mentoring programmes for both mentors and mentees.

Summary of Module 2: How to be an effective mentor

We ask our students to think about what they want to achieve from the programme and to come prepared to the first meeting outlining their mentoring goals.

Summary of Module 3: Preparing for the mentoring relationship and building rapport

Within your first few interactions it’s about getting to know each other and seeing what common interests you share.
Together you should establish boundaries around how and when you will communicate.

Summary of Module 4: Ongoing meetings

These should be led by the student mentee who should set agendas and ask insightful questions.
Mentees should monitor and reflect on their progress to ensure they are on track to achieve what they set out to do.
We ask mentors and mentees to give each other feedback throughout the process – if you think the sessions could be improved, put forward your suggestions and we have asked mentees to do the same.

Summary of Module 5: Moving forward

Towards the end of the scheme the mentee should arrange a final meeting with you to evaluate the relationship.

Completing this course takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
