Extending openness in astronomy from research to education - by Warrick Ball

Abstract: Astronomy has long provided public data. Our research software is increasingly also open source, but open education resources are mostly limited to static and often unlicensed slides or lecture notes. I’ll discuss how new open learning resources could leverage the existing openness and connect students to cutting-edge tools and data.

Bio: Warrick is a Postdoctoral Fellow in School of Physics and Astronomy, where he studies vibrations in stars, almost entirely with open source software and publicly available data. His key role is in deciding how the European Space Agency’s upcoming PLATO satellite will determine how old stars are from the frequencies at which they vibrate.

Teaching programming, and teaching with programming: preparing students for tomorrow’s working world - by Christopher (Kit) Windows Yule

Abstract: The ability to code is a sought-after skill in the working world, and in the not-too-distant future likely to be a requisite in many professions. In this session I discuss the use of open-source tools to not only teach students how to code, but how interactive coding exercises can help them better learn course content.

Bio: Kit is a Royal Academy of Engineering Fellow and a Turing Fellow who uses diverse experimental and computational tools to address global challenges in science, industry, and medicine. He leads an interdisciplinary group containing Chemical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Nuclear Engineers and Physicists.

Sharing education resources: no half open door - by Colin De la Higuera

Abstract: In many Universities the situation is similar: the chosen Learning Management System (LMS) is closed. It is often tempting to open partially and allow only some users to have access to the developed courseware. We will try to understand if such half open solutions are possible.

Bio: Colin de la Higuera is Professor in Computer Science at Nantes University (France). He has been the founding president of the SIF, the French Informatics Society and is currently a trustee of the Knowledge for All foundation. In 2021 UNESCO renewed the Chair in “Open Educational Resources and Artificial Intelligence”.
