Abstract

MDS Pathways is a programme of peer mentoring and professional development supporting Pathways to Birmingham participants’ transition to university. These presentations and workshop will provide an overview of MDS Pathways, how MDS Pathways impacted transition and will provide the opportunity to discuss how similar activities could be developed in other Colleges.MDS Pathways is a programme of peer mentoring and professional development supporting Pathways to Birmingham participants’ transition to university. These presentations and workshop will provide an overview of MDS Pathways, how MDS Pathways impacted transition and will provide the opportunity to discuss how similar activities could be developed in other Colleges.

Students who enter the University via Pathways to Birmingham make up a large proportion of the Birmingham Scholar students who we are focussing on in our Access and Participation Plan targets. Access, attainment and employability gaps exist for these students and therefore a successful transition to university may go some way towards narrowing these gaps. The format of MDS Pathways may provide a useful framework by which other Colleges can introduce specific peer mentoring for this group of students. For the 2019/20 cohort, analysis of a detailed transition survey performed in MDS and LES provides data to support the development of resources and activities to enhance transition in particular areas.
