Editing and proofreading
As a last step, you need to show that:
You have carefully edited and proofread your work, making sure everything you include is relevant to your argument and there is a clear structure to your argument You have followed all instructions given regarding presentation, such as including cover pages, page numbers, a bibliography, and appendices and illustrations if appropriate. You also need to follow the recommended style guide and format the document as you have been told You have complied with the academic conventions expected of you at this level i.e. writing for an academic reader, referencing all works cited (i.e. mentioned in your essay or referred to in footnotes)

What have you learned so far in your academic career about editing, proofreading and presentation?
If you pride yourself on your spelling and grammar, then keep up the good work, but if you know that you are inclined to be lax with your punctuation, write over-long sentences, repeat yourself or hand in unstructured and waffly essays, then we suggest that this might be the time to address this issues. The 'Command of English' module on these Canvas pages is an excellent place to start!
What have you learned so far about referencing other writers' work? This will probably be new to you, and your first year is the time to get this sorted. You will probably never know the department's chosen style-guide off by heart, but the important thing is to understand the principles of referencing, and where to find out how to do it. The Module on Presentation can be useful for you here
To finish, write a list of three things that you feel confident about, as you move into your undergraduate courses, and three things that you would like to develop during your first year at university

KEY POINTS

Make sure you leave time to polish up your essays before you hand them in. Think of your audience - and make sure they are not going to be distracted by silly mistakes that could have been avoided
You probably won't 'lose marks' for making typos or spelling mistakes unless there are systematic errors throughout your essay, but your marker will comment on them, and it will seem like a big deal
If you have difficulty with this aspect of your writing, then make sure you register this with Wellbeing and get the help you need from Learning Services. You may need a RAP (Reasonable Adjustment Plan) so that your tutors are aware that your special circumstances nee to be taken into account when marking.
